Frisbee - story

Historyfrisbeedates back to the 1950s. It was then that a product created by an American, W alter Frederick Morrison, appeared on the market. The man liked to spend his holidays actively, and one of his pastimes was throwing with his wife … a metal cake pan. The inventor of the frisbee, however, stated that throwing equipment should be more practical after all, and developed the Pluto Platter - the plate-like product we know today as frisbee. It is worth noting that Morrison sold the rights to his invention to Wham-O, which in turn called it Frisbee. Already in the 1960s, the popularity of frisbee became so great that the game not only diversified family trips, but also became a team sport with specific rules.

The first frisbee tournament was played in 1975.

Today, frisbee is a disc made of plastic, most often plastic, 20-25 cm wide. What makes the puck so impressively hovering in the air? It is subject to a lifting force, created by the pressure difference above and below the disc. The fact that the thrower makes it rotate stabilizes the flight.

Frisbee - how to throw?

There are several basic methods of throwing a Frisbee disc:

  • Backhand- this is the method that beginners usually start with. It consists in throwing the frisbee from behind the back in positionhorizontal. The frisbee will fly further, the more we throw it away. Before throwing the frisbee backhand, we can grab the disc in different ways. The power grip grips the disc from the bottom with all fingers clenched into a fist (except for the thumb, which stabilizes the disc from the top). By choosing this technique, we can expect a long, but not necessarily accurate, flight of the puck. In turn, the split-fingers grip also involves catching the disc with all fingers from the top, but not clenched into a fist, but freely spread, also with the thumb stabilizing the disc from the top. Thanks to this solution, we will gain more control over the flight of the disk. On the other hand, the third type of grip - single-finger, consists in stabilizing the frisbee from above with the thumb, but also placing the index finger right next to the edge of the disc from the bottom to add stabilization. The remaining fingers are clenched into a fist from underneath. Thanks to the single-finger grip we will get a distant but not very energetic flight.
  • Forehand- Frisbee throw used by advanced players. The middle finger thrower supports the disc from below, helping himself also from below with his index finger. The grip is similar to the sidearm pitch known from baseball and is often referred to as a flick.
  • Hammer- rarely used overhead disc ejection, the disc is ejected vertically upwards and only during the flight it turns to the horizontal position.

Frisbee - game types

It might seem that frisbee is simply throwing a plastic puck at the other person, but it turns out that the game has several types.

Freestyle frisbeeis a discipline of improvising with a disc. People who practice it make various variations with the disc: they catch, twist, rotate, and their performances look very spectacular. One of the most popular evolution of freestyle frisbee is the nail delay, which involves spinning the puck on your finger like a basketball. Freestyle frisbee is not as popular in Poland as, for example, in the USA, where it has been a sports discipline since the 1970s. Growing it does not require strength, but rather patience and accuracy.

When playing freestyle frisbee, use a 160 gram disc.

Ultimate frisbeeis a team frisbee game whose rules are a mix of rugby, handball, basketball and soccer. The game is spectacular, players have to be fast and skillful, it is a non-contact sport. Disciplinedevelops motor coordination, and both men and women play ultimate frisbee.

When playing Ultimate Frisbee, use a 175 grams disc.

Dog frisbee- a specific discipline in which the competitors are people and dogs. As you can easily guess, a human throws a frisbee and the dog catches it. The dog frisbee itself has several varieties:

  • longdistance - it consists in making the longest possible throw;
  • timetrial - two 20-meter throws are made and the dog catches the puck in the shortest possible time;
  • superminidistance - the dog retrieves the frisbee in a specially designated field;
  • freestyle - the owner makes various throws and the dog grips the frisbee in different ways;
  • dogdartbee - the dog catches the puck in one of the designated zones.

Frisbee - game rules

When playing frisbee on a recreational basis, we do not have to follow any restrictive rules ( although of course we can help ourselves, e.g. by using the appropriate throwing technique).

It is different withultimate frisbee , in which the game is played by two 7-person teams, and the playing field measures 100x37 meters. The attacking team scores a point if its member catches the frisbee in the opponent's end zone. Teams try to prevent each other from capturing the puck. Frisbee is not allowed to run, if a specific competitor catches the disc, he must stop and without lifting one leg from the ground, pass the puck to a teammate. A Frisbee that is dropped, caught off the pitch, or knocked down, or intercepted by the defending team causes that team to go into the offense.

Importantly, the judges do not watch over the course of Ultimate Frisbee games, all disputes are resolved by players. If no agreement is reached, the given fragment of the game is repeated.
