Eating highly processed foods rich in various additives: dyes and preservatives certainly does not help. Some people get heartburn from coffee, others from apples. To help yourself, it is not enough to take antacids for heartburn. It is worth avoiding foods that irritate us and not overeating.

Heartburn is often the result of overeating, because the excess food in the stomach raises the pressure in the abdominal cavity and promotes the regurgitation of food into the esophagus, which increases heartburn. Obese people and pregnant women often suffer from heartburn - precisely because of the increased pressure in the abdominal cavity.

Heartburn as a symptom of acid reflux. Why do we have heartburn?

Reflux, i.e. the regurgitation of food contents into the esophagus, rarely occurs in everyone - after a very heavy meal or when full, trying to exercise. It happens, however, that reflux becomes a disease and annoys after each meal, as well as when we lie down or bend down. What causes acid reflux?

  • damage to the mechanism that prevents the return of gastric contents
  • causes of reflux are also disordersesophageal motility, esophageal cleansing disorders
  • acid reflux and heartburn arise when there is an overproduction of stomach acid
  • increased pressure in the abdominal cavity (e.g. as a result of being overweight or pregnant)
  • irritation or inflammation of the esophagus (after alcohol and smoking)
  • eating foods and drinks that promote heartburn: alcohol, coffee, tea, carbonated drinks, chocolate, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, hot spices, fatty foods, mint, yeast dough, peanuts
  • hiatal hernia
  • gastric emptying disorders
  • saliva deficiency
  • scleroderma - connective tissue disease
  • some medications that slow down the lower esophageal sphincter.

Heartburn: remedies for heartburn

If you do not want to have heartburn, distribute your meals more evenly throughout the day - eat more often and eat less. Do not eat at night - the last meal should be eaten two hours before going to bed.

After a larger meal, it is good to take a walk. If you are tired of heartburn, you need to limit the consumption of coffee and alcohol, also exercise moderation in drinking tea, especially strong tea, and definitely limit the consumption of sweets. It's also better, at least for a while, to give up drinking carbonated drinks. When you have heartburn, you can usehome remedies for heartburn : take a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of warm water, drink some milk and eat a few almonds (they alkalize the stomach environment). Treating heartburn also includes taking over-the-counter antacids or medications prescribed by a doctor if you are being treated for acid reflux.
