Enema helps not only with intestinal problems such as constipation or intestinal cramps, but also when mouth odor and white coating on the tongue persist for a long time. Enemas can be done before labor and also before anal sex. Doctors also recommend the procedure before performing colonoscopy and other diagnostic tests. Find out when and for what purpose the enema is performed.

Enemais a procedure for cleansing the intestines of fecal masses that accumulate in the large intestine. Their long-term presence may cause diseases not only of the intestines, but also of other organs: kidneys, liver, bladder.

When should an enema be done?

The enema should be performed when the colon is not working properly. A poorly working intestine has a negative impact not only on the digestive system, but on the entire body, because the toxins accumulated in it poison the entire body. Therefore, the symptoms of a malfunctioning intestine can be seen in:

  • digestive system: constipation, intestinal cramps, abdominal pain and cramps, heaviness in the lower body, difficulty defecating, ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the colon mucosa)
  • respiratory system: bad breath, white or gray coating on the tongue, inflammation of the oral mucosa
  • nervous system: recurring headaches, apathy and irritability
  • on the skin: body odor, blemishes on the skin

Enema will cleanse our intestines from fungi and parasites that live in it, stimulate the functioning of the intestinal microflora, improve the absorption of nutrients from food, reduce the number of acne breakouts on the skin and change the unpleasant smell our body or our breath.

Administering drugs with an enema

An enema can be given when a drug cannot be administered orally. In addition, some medications administered through an enema are much better absorbed into the body because they do not pass through the digestive system.

This is why drugs for cancer, arthritis and macular degeneration are administered with enemas. In addition, it can be administered into the rectummedications, such as corticosteroids and mesalazine, which are used to treat inflammatory bowel disease.

Enema is also used before some operations. The patient is then given anesthetics to prevent nausea and vomiting during and after surgery.

Enema before colonoscopy and laparoscopy

He always performs an enema before a colonoscopy, which is an examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract. Intestine cleansing is performed with 1 liter of lukewarm water with sodium phosphate (this substance causes the absorption of water from the blood into the large intestine, thanks to which the intestinal villi are thoroughly cleansed), at a temperature of 25-30 degrees Celsius.

The enema is repeated until "clear" water is expelled, therefore it may take up to several hours. In preparation for laparoscopy, the enema is performed in the evening, the day before the examination. However, only some hospitals use this method of preparation for the examination.

Enema before childbirth

The enema is a method that is less and less used in maternity wards. However, some doctors recommend giving an enema before labor for several reasons:

  • thanks to the enema, the stool is passed away less frequently during childbirth (thanks to this, the baby will not have contact with the bacteria in the stool),
  • the enema speeds up the labor,
  • defecating in the first few days after childbirth is difficult, therefore, taking an enema before childbirth means that a woman after giving birth does not have to use the toilet and be afraid of involuntary defecation (e.g. in the postpartum room).

According to the World He alth Organization (WHO), an enema has no medical justification and does not need to be performed. Consequently, you may not agree to an enema. However, if you want to do it and feel more comfortable in labor, do it yourself at home before going to the hospital.

Enema and anal sex

Taking an enema before anal sex is not necessary, but using it may prevent possible defecation during sex.

If you choose to do so, be aware that an anal trauma can occur when you get an enema, which can increase your risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. To heal any irritation, give an enema a few hours before intercourse begins.
