Rose is an infectious skin disease that, if left untreated or diagnosed late, can lead to many complications, including life-threatening sepsis (sepsis). The problem is that the rose is easily mistaken for venous thrombosis, which delays the correct diagnosis and treatment. What are the causes and symptoms of erysipelas? How is this skin disease treated?

Roseisskin disease , the essence of which is an acute, spreading inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. A rose is, in theory,an infectious disease . However, it is rare for someone to catch the disease from another person. Rose is an infection of the deeper layers of the skin, dermis and subcutaneous tissue, therefore the top layer of the skin (epidermis) provides protection against infection. In order to get sick, so-called predisposing factors, e.g. mycosis, ulcers etc.

A rose taken once does not give immunity . On the contrary - its disease increases the risk of reinfection and may cause serious systemic disorders.

Rose (skin disease) - causes

The cause of the disease is infection with bacteria, most often streptococci, less often golden staphylococcus. Inflammation can develop through skin injuries and wound infection.

Rose (skin disease) - symptoms

Inflammation is manifested by pain, increased heat, swelling and tenderness of a larger area of the skin, most often the extremities ( although it can also appear on the face).

A characteristic feature of the disease isdark red, even purple skin reaction , which increases day by day. In addition, there are systemic symptoms characteristic of inflammation, that is:

  • increased body temperature
  • chills

distinguish between erysipelas and superficial vein thrombosis of the lower extremities.

In addition, each type of disease is distinguished by other symptoms:

  • blistering rose- blisters, separation of the epidermis due to the accumulation of exudate fluid in the papillary layer
  • hemorrhagic rose- hemorrhagic symptoms (slight subcutaneous bleeding, single red spots)
  • gangrenous rose- necrosis and gangrene(gangrene, i.e. tissue breakdown)
  • migrating rose- spreading inflammation through lymphatic vessels
  • recurrent rose- some time after the end of the disease, inflammatory erythema appears in the same place on the body
  • neoplastic rose- inflammatory reaction may lead to the development of the so-called paraneoplastic (paraneoplastic) syndromes, i.e. syndromes of symptoms related to the occurrence of cancer, but not directly related to its effects

Rose (skin disease) - diagnosis

A dermatologist, after carrying out physical examinations, should order blood tests (including immunological tests - the level of antistreptolysin O, i.e. ASO). Doppler ultrasound and angiography of the lower extremities are also performed in order to exclude thrombosis of the lower veins.

Rose (skin disease) - treatment

Rose treatment is a long-term process (it lasts from 1 to 3 months) and consists in administering antibiotics to the patient.

Ichthyol ointments are used topically.

As a rule, the changes regress, leaving no scars (except for the gangrenous rose).

Rose - complications

  • vascular edema that can lead to elephantiasis, i.e. increased limb edema due to obstructed outflow of lymph (lymph)
  • deep vein thrombosis (thrombosis)
  • phlegmon (purulent inflammation of the skin tissue)
  • corneal clumps
  • cavernous sinusitis
  • sepsa
