Already at the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, those groups of patients were identified at a particularly high risk of coronavirus infection. Recent studies have shown that this large community should be joined by other people who have not been mentioned in global guidelines so far.
Identifyinggroups exposed to a greater risk of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infectionwas one of the priorities in the fight against the global pandemic. The ultimate goal was to implement such measures to maximally protect people from risk groups from falling ill withCOVID-19 , its more severe course and a higher risk of death as a result of complications of this disease.
The aforementioned special risk groups include, inter alia, people:
- older
- with hypertension
- with diabetes
- with cardiovascular diseases
- with asthma
- with tuberculosis
- with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- with chronic kidney disease
- with diseases of the cerebral vessels
- with obesity disease - especially grade III obesity
- smoking cigarettes
- postmenopausal women

Further studies on the specificity, routes and course of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection mean that, unfortunately, the list of people particularly at risk of this virus is growing by new groups of patients.
A recent study published in the medical journal " Annals of Internal Medicine " found that this list should also include people not even mentioned before.
It turned out that people exposed to 10 times more frequent coronavirus infection and COVID -19 disease are people withDown syndrome , i.e. trisomy 21. with Down's syndrome, the risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms, and as a result of their hospitalization, increases 4 times.
Why is COVID-19 particularly dangerous for this group of patients? Scientists give two main reasons. The first is he alth conditions. People with Down's syndrome are more likely to suffer from decreased immunity, heart failure, and lung dysfunction. The second reason is intellectual disability (to varying degrees) comorbid with Down syndrome, whichcauses that these people may have trouble receiving, assimilating and complying with the regulations limiting the spread of the coronavirus.
