The coronavirus epidemic in China is making more and more circles, and the number of people infected with the virus in Poland is growing every day. However, for COVID-19 disease - as well as for many other viral infections - so far there is no single drug that would quickly combat symptoms, although scientists are looking for medicinal substances that can inhibit the multiplication of the virus and thus stop the disease.

Coronavirus drug: what drugs do patients get?

So how are people diagnosed with the coronavirus treated? As with other viral infections, in most cases treatment is primarily aimed at relieving symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, also by supporting breathing and maintaining vital functions.

During treatment, antipyretics and cough medications are used, and patients are also advised to rest and drink plenty of fluids. People with complications such as breathing problems are treated with oxygen therapy, and in very severe cases - a respirator.

The guidelines in such cases come down to the use of treatments that support important organ functions. Sick patients are kept in isolation because only in this way can the further spread of the coronavirus be avoided. Therefore, people suffering from COVID-19 are treated in hospitals in infectious wards.

Coronavirus drug: WHO recommendations

So far, it is not known which drug could effectively defeat the coronavirus. It is known, however, what is not effective. Among such substances, the WHO on its website mentions primarily antibiotics. And he cautions: “Antibiotics don't work against viruses, they only work against bacterial infections.

COVID-19 is caused by a virus, so antibiotics don't work. Antibiotics should not beused as a means of preventing or treating COVID-19. They should only be used as directed by a doctor to treat a bacterial infection. "

The organization's experts also do not recommend self-medication - if you suspect COVID-19 infection, contact the nearest station of the sanitary inspectorate.

Coronavirus drug: new substances are being investigated

While there are currently no officially approved drugs for the coronavirus, work continues on such substances. A few of them seem very promising.

One such agent is remdesvir, which can block the activity of an enzyme important for viral replication (as proven in a study recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry). Moreover, preliminary research suggests that this drug may also prove effective in treating Ebola infection.

Chloroquine, currently used to treat malaria and autoimmune diseases, may also be a potential drug against COVID-19 infection - studies have shown that it has antiviral and immune-modulating effects. Clinical trials in China have shown that oral administration of chloroquine 500 mg for 10 days inhibits the worsening of pneumonia and shortens the duration of infection. Other treatments are being tested, including combinations of drugs used in anti-HIV treatment.
