None of the vaccinated children received CPR due to PIMS. This is very important information for pediatricians - said prof. Leszek Szenborn. The vaccine is more than 91% effective in preventing the occurrence of pocovid syndrome in children.

On January 7, 2022, a paper was published in the United States, which shows that the COVID-19 vaccine protects children against PIMS (the so-called multi-system inflammatory syndrome) at the level of over 91 percent. This information was provided at the press conference on Tuesday by prof. Leszek Szenborn, head of the Department and Clinic of Paediatrics and Infectious Diseases of the University Teaching Hospital (USK) in Wrocław.

Pocovid syndrome in children is a rare complication following SARS-CoV-2 virus infection with a pathomechanism not fully known. It is a generalized inflammation that damages various tissues and organs. Common PIMS symptoms include high fever and damage to various organs.

Important information for pediatricians

The vaccine prevents complications from COVID-19 in the form of PIMS. Prof. Leszek Szenborn said that so far over 367,000 have been vaccinated in the USK. people, including 1030 children with the first dose in the age group 5-11 years and 340 with two doses.

- No vaccinated child has received CPR due to PIMS. Parents did not report any disturbing symptoms, which does not mean that they do not exist. Three-quarters of children who have the vaccine have shoulder pain, but these are mild symptoms. These vaccines are very well tolerated - said Prof. Leszek Szenborn.

According to an expert, it is impossible to stop the COVID-19 epidemic without vaccination. He noted that the fourth wave of infections for children was much greater than the second and third waves. As added by prof. Leszek Szenborn, "for the first time so many children got sick at the same time."

The infectious disease specialist emphasized that the fourth wave also saw an increase in the number of PIMS patients. Fortunately, he said, there are effective treatment regimens for this complication.
