According to PAP, a new variant of the coronavirus described as C.1.2 has been identified in South Africa. In the research carried out by scientists, it turned out that this variant is the most mutated in relation to SARS-CoV-2 initiated in Wuhan.
Variant C.1 was the dominant variety during the first wave of the epidemic in South Africa. In May this year, its variant was discovered - C.1.2, which systematically increases its share in the total number of infections. Experts emphasize that the Beta and Delta variants have similarly increased in the past.
A characteristic feature of the new variant is the large number of mutations -separates it from the original virus from 44 to 59mutations. Scientists predict that the combined mutation C.1.2 may be much more contagious and more difficult to control with currently available vaccines.
C.1.2 infections are not limited to South Africa. They have also been found in Portugal, Great Britain, New Zealand, China, Switzerland, Mauritius and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
