At the beginning of the new month, a ban on the sale of cosmetic products containing zinc pyrithione and lily comes into force. Therefore, many popular anti-dandruff preparations will disappear from the shelves of shops, drugstores and pharmacies.
Pursuant to the regulation of the European Commission, both substances were considered harmful and negatively influencing reproduction. The regulation will come into force on March 1, 2022, therefore many popular products will disappear from pharmacy and drugstore shelves. Cosmetic products containing zinc lily and pyrithione may not be placed on the market or sold and made available to consumers free of charge.
The first of the harmful substances is a synthetic aromatic aldehyde, used in aromas and fragrance compositions. Lilial is used in many popular cleansing and care products. The second is zinc pyrithione. Experts emphasize that the recall of products containing this substance may be much more noticeable for consumers.
Zinc pyrithione is used, inter alia, in combating bacteria and fungi or treating scalp diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, mycosis, psoriasis and eczema. This substance is also found in popular hair loss remedies and has raised doubts about it for many years. safety. It has been classified as having a negative effect on reproduction (CMR category 1B).
However, due to its anti-dandruff effect, it was allowed to be used in hair care preparations, but its content in a given specificity was clearly limited. Although in 2022 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) issued an opinion that zinc pyrithione can be considered safe when used in a maximum concentration of 1%. in rinse-off hair products, many of the popular anti-dandruff shampoos will not be available for purchase from March 1.
The Polish Union of the Cosmetics Industry emphasizes that most manufacturers were ready for this step many months before the regulation was issued. Products containing zinc lilial and zinc pyrithione will be available for sale until the end of February, and customers who purchased before March 1, 2022 will be able to use them until the deadlinevalidity.
