Tubal ligation(you can also meet the incorrect termovarian ligation ) is a procedure aimed at permanently depriving a woman of fertility.Female sterilizationconsists in breaking the continuity of the fallopian tubes, and thus - breaking the path that the egg goes to the uterus and which the sperm travels to the egg. Thus, tubal ligation is considered to be the most effective method of contraception. According to Pearl index, its effectiveness is 0.15-0.10. This means that the average number of unwanted pregnancies resulting from sexual intercourse in 100 couples using this method of contraception is 0.15-0.10.

Tubal Ligation - Methods

1) Laparotomy

To get to the fallopian tubes, the doctor opens the abdominal cavity. Then he ligates the fallopian tubes using one of several methods:

  • crushing the fallopian tube using the Mandler method - involves crushing the fallopian tubes and putting on a ligature
  • Pomeroy's operation - involves cutting out a fragment of the fallopian tube and attaching ties to both ends
  • excision of the fallopian tube using the Labhardt method - a 1-2 cm segment of the fallopian tube is cut out, and the resulting stump is placed in a "pocket" made of the peritoneum
  • cutting the fallopian tube using the Irving method - the doctor ligates the fallopian tubes on both sides and then cuts them. The resulting stumps are treated as in the Labhardt method
  • clip sterilization - special clips are attached to the fallopian tubes

2) Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy involves the insertion of special tools for surgical procedures through a hole made in the navel using the troakar of a laparoscope with a visual track and through small incisions above the symphysis pubis. Laparoscopy makes it possible to conductall surgeries on the fallopian tube, including electrocoagulation of the fallopian tubes.
